No. 6 Cortland Dispatches Geneseo in SUNYAC Semifinals

CORTLAND, N.Y. Senior Nicki Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) scored a career-high five goals and freshman Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) scored four goals to lead the nationally sixth-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team to a 15-4 win versus Geneseo in the semifinals of the SUNYAC Tournament.

The Red Dragons improved to 15-2 on the season and advance to the title game Saturday at noon against 20th-ranked Brockport, a 20-15 winner over Buffalo St. in the second semifinal. The Knights fell to 8-8 with the loss.

Sophomore Kelly Radigan (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) added two goals and two assists for Cortland, senior Jess Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored twice, sophomore Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) registered one goal and one assist and junior Bri Shost (Mahopac) scored a goal. Freshman goalie Ally Levy (Reisterstown, MD/Seton Keough) made seven saves.

Junior Anna Hutchings (Syracuse/Westhill) led Geneseo's offense with two goals. Senior Abby Hungerford (Syracuse/Corcoran) and freshman Rachel Petrone (Rochester/Penfield) each scored a goal and junior Lauren Burgoon (Syracuse/West Genesee) chipped in with an assist. Junior goalie Annie Smith (Rochester/Penfield) stopped nine shots.

After Mahoney and Hungerford traded goals to start the scoring, Cortland ended the first half with five straight goals and a 6-1 lead. Di Fato scored twice during the run and Mahoney, Radigan and Fritz each tallied a goal.

Hutchings made it a 6-2 game at 29 minutes, nine seconds of the second half with a free-position goal, but Di Fato sandwiched two goals around a Fritz score and the Red Dragons led 9-2 with 24:34 remaining. Hutchings scored her second at 19:33 and Mahoney followed with back-to-back goals before Abbott and SHost scored to push Cortland's lead to 13-3 at the 12:13 mark. Burgoon assisted Petrone's score at 6:02 and Mahoney and Radigan finished the scoring at 5:30 and 3:55, respectively.
