No. 4 North Carolina Rallies to Defeat Ohio State in Shootout

Beery set up Pires for a long shot at 10:20 of the fourth quarter to draw the Buckeyes within two (15-13). The Tar Heels scored the final four goals of the game for the 19-13 final, with DeLaney (7:18), Chris Layne (5:35), Wood (4:55) and Holman (2:25) scoring.

North Carolina outshot Ohio State, 56-32, in the game. Buckeye starter Brandon Freeman played the first 32:35 and had seven saves, allowing 12 goals. Freshman Ryan Brant came in for the final 12:25 of the third and had four stops before Freeman went back in for the final quarter. Freeman played 47:35 total and allowed 16 goals with 15 saves, including eight stops in the fourth quarter. For the Tar Heels Madalon had five saves on 14 shots in 24:48 and Restivo had eight stops with four goals in 35:12 to pick up the win.

The Tar Heels won 22 of 35 faceoffs and topped the Buckeyes in groundballs, 46-33.

The teams were productive on man-up chances, with Ohio State 2 for 2 and the Tar Heels 3 for 4.

Postgame Notes

Schuss, who entered the weekend first in the ECAC in points per game, closes out the year first on the team with 31 goals, 25 assists and 56 points. He had at least one point in every game on the year. His 56 points rank 14th in Buckeye history for a single season.

Smail and Beery both ended the game with two points on a goal and an assist. Smail's assist was his first of the season and it was his second multiple-point game. Beery marked his first multiple-point game as a Buckeye.

Pires had a goal and two helpers for three points to match his season high for points and tie his personal-best in assists, first set April 19, 2009 vs. Denver.

Boyt's assist was the first of his career and marked his first point since April 4, 2009 vs. Bellarmine.

Tundo's assist gave him 35 points on the year, ranking him second on the squad in points and assists (15). He closes out the year on a seven-game point streak.

Freeman had double-digit saves for the 11th time this year, with the 15 stops matching a career best.

The Tar Heels entered the game second nationally in team defense, allowing just over seven goals a game.

Senior defenseman Scott Foreman ended his career starting his final 49 games. He had two caused turnovers in the game.

Ventiquattro closes his career with 98 points, including 73 goals and 25 assists.
