No. 5 Duke Blows by Brown in Regular Season Finale

DURHAM, N.C. - Five different Blue Devils registered hat tricks and Duke tallied a season-high 23 goals as the No. 5/6 Duke women's lacrosse team routed Brown, 23-9, in its regular season finale Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium. Duke must now await a selection to the 2010 NCAA Championships, which will be announced this evening between 10 and 11 p.m. on the CBS College Sports Network.

With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 13-5 for the season, while Brown falls to 7-8. Duke fired 39 shots to 17 by the Bears, picked up 21 ground balls and won the draw, 19-15.

A season-best 13 Blue Devils registered a goal in the match as Duke topped the 20-goal plateau for the first time this season. Senior Lindsay Gilbride led the way with three goals and three assists, followed closely by Christie Kaestner's five points on three goals and two assists. Sarah Bullard, Kat Thomas and Kim Wenger also netted hat tricks.

Rounding out the Duke offense was Virginia Crotty, Makenzie Hommel, Jillian Heinz, Danielle Kachulis, Bridget Nolan, Miller Hughes, Morgan Miller and Sara Giedgowd - whose score with 14 seconds remaining was the first of her career - with one goal apiece. In addition, Christie Barnes dished out two assists on the day. In goal, Kaitlin Gaiss picked up her seventh career win, making five saves for the victory.

Kaela McGilloway led Brown with two goals and an assist.

Although Duke had a strong day on offense, it was Brown who struck first in the contest as Tara Rooke put the visitors up 1-0 less than two minutes in. Back-to-back goals from Thomas and Gilbride gave Duke the lead, but the Bears tied the game at two-all eight minutes in. Duke looked firmly in control after a 6-1 spurt over the next eight minutes, yet Brown clawed its way back into the match with a 5-1 run of its own.

With their lead cut to a narrow 9-8 margin, the Blue Devils broke open the game for good with a 5-0 run to close out the first half and took a 14-8 advantage into the intermission.

The second half belonged to Duke as Thomas needed only 10 seconds to win the opening draw and find the back of the net to put the Devils up 15-8. McGilloway netted the Bears' final goal of the game at the 26:57 mark as Duke closed out the frame with eight unanswered to bring the final score to 23-9.

After the match, Duke honored the team's six graduating seniors - Christie Barnes, Sara Giedgowd, Lindsay Gilbride, Jillian Heinz, Danielle Kachulis and Betsey Sauer - in a post-game celebration.

The Blue Devils must now wait to learn their postseason fateas the selection committee will announce the 16-team field for the 2010 NCAA Championships tonight. The complete bracket will also be posted on www.NCAA.com immediately following the show.

Duke is looking to make its 13th consecutive NCAA appearance this season. A year ago, the Blue Devils fell to Pennsylvania, 10-9, in the second round of the tournament.
