Alvernia Runs Past Frostburg in ECAC Quarters

Reading, Pa. (May 12, 2010) - Freshman Alyssa Verrillo (North Wales, Pa./Archbishop Wood) scored five of her game-high six goals in the first half as fourth-seeded Alvernia University (12-5) built a 13-7 halftime lead en route to a 21-12 victory over #5 Frostburg St. Wednesday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Mid-Atlantic Region Championships at Schlager Memorial Field.

The Crusaders move on to the semifinals where they will face #1 FDU-Florham Saturday afternoon. The other semifinal, also played at FDU will pit #3 Ramapo College against #2 Washington & Jefferson. The finals are at FDU on Sunday.

On Wednesday, the Bobcats opened the game with the first goal before Verrillo scored three of four in a 4-0 Alvernia spurt.

Frostburg could not put together back-to-back goals until it scored three straight to close the half, but at that point the Crusaders led by six, 13-7.

Verrillo scored her team-leading 60th goal of the season to open the second half scoring, and later in the game four different players scored during an other 4-0 Alvernia run that pushed the lead to 10 goals, the largest of the game at 21-11.

Tonya Rutt (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) and Felicia Sippel (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) both scored four goals apiece while Vicky Kearn (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) and Jenn Czarnecki (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) split time in net and combined to make seven saves.
