No. 6 TCNJ Advances by Athenas to NCAA Quarterfinals

Salisbury, MD ... Junior Ali Jaeger (Hampton, NJ/North Hunterdon) scored four times to set a program record for most goals in a season as The College of New Jersey women's lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals with a 20-8 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday in Salisbury, MD.

Jaeger finished the game with four goals raising her season total to 86 as she moved past Repy Hattersley, who set the original mark of 84 back in the 1981 campaign. She also dished out a pair of assists leaving her one point shy of tying mark for points in a season at 112 set by Lee Moreau in 1989.

Not to be outdone, sophomore Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) also had a big day with three goals and three assists making her just the fourth player in program history to eclipse 100 points in a season. Mitchell has 54 goals and 47 assists this year for 101 points, and with each assist she adds to her own school record for assists in a season.

The win elevated TCNJ's record to 16-3 on the season, while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps saw its 10-game winning streak come to an end as they capped the season with a 16-3 record. TCNJ had faced the Athenas only one other time and that meeting also came in the postseason as the Lions picked up a 12-3 during the 2008 NCAA Tournament.

The win puts TCNJ into the regional final against host Salisbury University in a 1:00 p.m. start on Sunday, May 16. The winner of that game will then advance to the national semifinals slated for May 22 at Gettysburg College. The Sea Gulls advanced with an 18-9 win against Catholic. TCNJ and the Sea Gulls met back on April 10 with the Lions coming away with a 16-12 win in Ewing.

The game was close in the early going with the teams deadlocked at 2-2, but TCNJ used a modest 4-0 run to get the game under control. Scoring during that burst were Jaeger, Robin Deehan (Morris Plains, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth), Kathleen Notos (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic), and Sara Keating (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair).

After a Claremont-Mudd-Scripps goal, the Lions used another four-goal spurt and eventually led 10-6 at the half. The Lion defense took charge in the second half keeping the Athenas off of the scoreboard for the 22:28, while the offensive kept adding to the lead ripping off the half's first nine goals. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps did add two more goals, but TCNJ held the Athenas to their lowest scoring output of the season.

Adding scoring balance for the Lions, Notos notched six goals and one assist, while Keating netted four goals. Deehan had a steady game with three goals and one assist.

Junior Mary Waller (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) collected her 16th win of the season as she made three saves.
