#4 North Carolina Survives Shootout with #12 Delaware

The Blue Hens had taken the lead at 10-9 with 6:20 left in the third quarter when Ruiz completed a three-goal runf for Delaware, but North Carolina answered goals by DeLaney that tied the game at 10-10 and by Holman just 47 seconds later that gave UNC an 11-10 lead with 3:35 left in the quarter.

But as they did all game, the Hens never backed down. Kaleikau took a feed from Widlake to score the Hens' sixth extra man goal of the night to tie things for the 10th time at 11-11 with 3:07 remaining. UNC then came up withe goal that put the Tar Heels up for good when Holman scored on a fast break off a feed Kevin Piegare from with just 1:29 left in the stanza.

North Carolina extended the lead to two goals at 13-11 when Layne scored just 3:21 into the final stanza, but the Hens answered again when Cahill netted his third score of the game with 5:04 left to cut the gap to 13-12.

The Tar Heels came right back on the faceoff 12 seconds later to go up 14-12 when Mark Staines won the faceoff and then scored when Cam Wood won the groundball and fed him in front of the net.

The Blue Hens pulled to within a goal once again with 2:19 left to play when Kaminski scored a goal with 2:19 left. North Carolina gained possession and the Hens got the ball back but could not get a shot off as Ruiz turned the ball over with 43 seconds remaining.

North Carolina turned the ball over one more time with six seconds left, but by the time Delaware's Matt Stefurak picked up the loose ball behind the Blue Hen net and fired it downfield, it was too late for the Hens to get a shot off.

"This loss is a tough one," said Fossner, the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Most Valuable Player who went through an emotional post-season after losing his mother, Elaine, to breast cancer just two days before the team's CAA Tournament opener. "By the time you get to this point, every team is a good one and everyone is a competitor. There are a lot of things to feel good about but it's still frustrating to go out like this. Hopefully we can make another run again."
