Challenging Slate Awaits Hofstra for 2011 Season

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra University Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Abby Morgan today released her squad's 2011 schedule, a 16-game slate that features 11 opponents that won at least 10 games last season and four schools that qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2010.

"Our 2011 schedule follows the tradition that has been set here at Hofstra," commented Morgan. "We continue to play top notch non-conference opponents to prepare us for our competitive Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) schedule. Coming off a year in which two CAA teams made the NCAA Tournament, we need to compete against the best in the country to achieve our post-season goals."

Hofstra's nine non-conference opponents in 2011 put together a combined winning percentage of 66% (102-52) in 2010, with the University of Pennsylvania leading the way with a 15-4 mark last season.

Penn is one of two teams on the Pride's schedule that advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament last season, with James Madison being the other. In addition to those two schools, Notre Dame and Towson are the other two opponents on the schedule that made the NCAA Tournament.

The season gets under way on February 16 when Hofstra hosts Boston College. The Eagles posted a 12-6 mark last season, and it will be the first meeting between the schools since 2004. From there the month of February will finish up with a pair of games, a road tilt at Oregon on February 20 and then a home contest versus Denver on February 25. The Pioneers won 13 games last season, one of six schools on the schedule with at least that many victories.

March will see Hofstra play a total of six games, with five of the six opponents during the month having won at least 10 games in 2010. The lone team during March that didn't reach double digits in wins was Notre Dame, but the Fighting Irish advanced to the NCAA Tournament out of the tough Big East Conference.

Hofstra opens the month with three of the first four games on the road as they visit Albany (13-3 in 2010) on March 5 before coming home to the friendly confines of James M. Shuart Stadium on March 9 for an encounter with Penn. Following the meeting with the Quakers, Hofstra will travel to Rutgers (11-5 in 2010) on March 12 and then head to Happy Valley to face Penn State (10-7 in 2010) on March 16.

The month of March closes with home games against Fairfield (13-5 in 2010) and the previously mentioned Fighting Irish on March 27. The games against Penn and Notre Dame are rematches of games from last season as Hofstra dropped narrow one-goal defeats to both #8 Notre Dame (13-12) and #4 Penn (6-5).

The Pride will face all seven of its CAA rivals during the month of April, beginning with a road game at Delaware on April 8. Hofstra's first home CAA tilt is against Towson (13-5 in 2010) on April 10 before the Pride hits the road for games at William & Mary (April 15) and Old Dominion (April 17).

Hofstra will close the regular season with a trio of home games as George Mason visits Hempstead on April 22, followed by James Madison on April 24. The regular season finale will see the Pride face the Dragons of Drexel on April 28.

The CAA Championship will be hosted by the regular season champion on May 5 and 7, while NCAA Tournament gets underway on May 14. The semifinals and National Championship game will take place on May 27 and 29 in Stony Brook, New York.
