Massachusetts Welcomes 10 Newcomers for 2011 Season

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass women's lacrosse head coach Angela McMahon has announced 10 newcomers for the 2011 season. McMahon became head coach of the Minutewomen in July after leading Connecticut for the past two seasons. Of the 10 newcomers, seven earned All-America honors during the course of their prep careers.

The incoming freshman class is made up of Melissa Carelli (Maplewood, N.J.), Shannon Defliese (Garden City, N.Y.), Katie Ferris (Carthage, N.Y.), Tanner Guarino (Framingham, Mass.), Shannon McDonald (Hicksville, N.Y.), Kelsey McGovern (Acton, Mass.), Courtney McGrath (Nanuet, N.Y.), Paige Morelli (Hooksett, N.H.), Sam Rush (West Babylon, N.Y.), and Kelsey Sheridan (Chelmsford, Mass.).

"This is a terrific group of incoming student-athletes," said McMahon. "We return the bulk of our Atlantic 10 Championship team from last year and I feel this group will help us keep the program competing at a high level."

Carelli is a 2010 graduate of Columbia High School where she was All-New Jersey selection as a senior midfielder. She netted 54 goals and 23 assists to give her 145 tallies and 57 helpers for her career. She was also an Academic All-American in 2009 and 2010. This past summer she participated in the Senior Showcase sponsored by U.S. Lacrosse in Florida.

Defliese is the younger sister of rising UMass junior midfielder Dayna. A 2010 graduate of Garden City High School, she was an Honorable Mention All-American last season after helping the Trojans to a fourth consecutive New York State Championship.

Ferris holds the New York record for goals in a single season after she posted 138 as a junior in 2009. She scored 107 as a senior in 2010 to go along with 28 assists giving her 470 goals and 115 assists for her career. She was a two-time All-Central New York selection and an All-American selection.

A 2010 graduate of Framingham High School, Guarino earned All-American honors as a senior after leading the Flyers to a Massachusetts State title. She scored 79 goals and added 51 assists as a senior. For her career, she had 199 goals and 105 assists, while she also was a standout on the basketball and swim teams.

McDonald played midfield for Hicksville High School where she was a two-time All-County selection. She netted 156 goals and 63 assists for her career. She was also an All-Conference selection in soccer and a regional finalist and MVP on the track team.

McGovern is a two-time All-American selection from Acton-Boxborough High School where she was also a league all-star and an all-scholastic pick. She led the Colonials with 65 goals and 15 assists as a senior. She also competed on the track team where she was a member of the 4x400 relay team at the 2010 Nike Indoor Nationals.

A four-time all-league selection and 2009 All-America pick, McGrath is a 2010 graduate of Nanuet Senior High School. She posted 140 career goals and 64 assists for the Knights despite missing the bulk of 2010 with injury. McGrath also was an all-league selection on the soccer team.

Morelli twice earned Upper New England accolades as a midfielder for Central High School. As a junior in 2009, she was a 2nd Team All-New Hampshire selection before missing her senior season due to injury. For her career, she netted 87 goals and 48 assists.

A two-time Academic All-American, Rush scored 206 career goals and added 36 assists in her career at West Babylon High School. As a senior, she earned All-Long Island Second-Team honors after posting 72 goals and 11 assists as an attack.
