Brendan Looney, Navy '04, Killed in Afghanistan (update 9/30)

The Department of Defense confirmed the deaths of four sailors who died in a helicopter crash on Sept. 21 during combat operations in the Zabul province, Afghanistan while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. The losses include Lt. (SEAL) Brendan J. Looney, who played lacrosse for Navy and graduated in 2004.

Looney was among nine people who were killed when a Blackhawk helicopter went down yesterday. More information on the crash can be found at the Navy Times web site. Brendan had reportedly been due to return to the United States on October 5 to transition out of the Navy to civilian life.

Brendan, from Silver Spring, Md., is the eldest of the Looney brothers to play for Navy. He came to the Academy from DeMatha Catholic High School as a football recruit and made the switch to lacrosse as a sophomore, having never played the sport.
