Iona Lacrosse Welcomes Eight Recruits for 2011 Campaign

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College lacrosse program is pleased to announce its incoming class for the 2011 season. Head coach Michelle Mason and the Gaels will welcome eight newcomers to the squad next year.

"I am pleased to announce the Iona lacrosse class of 2014," said Mason. "Each member of the class of 2014 brings athleticism, dedication, and something unique to our program. Not only does this class bring competition to each position on the field, but also give us the size, speed, and talent to take the Gaels to the next level. The class of 2014 will excel athletically and academically, and raise the bar for the classes to come."

Joining Iona as a midfielder will be Nina Veneziale of Old Bridge, NJ. Veneziale amassed over 100 goals as a four-year starter at Old Bridge High School. She earned such accolades as 2007 Rookie of the Year, 2008 and 2009 First Team All-Area, and 2009 Offensive Player of the Year and MVP, among others.

Four new players will join the Gaels' attack including Bridget Sickles (Yorktown Heights, NY), Brenna Lade (Convent Station, NY), Kelsey Bub (Cortlandt Manor, NY), and Nicole Brancaccio (Norwalk, CT).

At Yorktown High School, Sickles was part of a team that ranked #21 in the nation in 2009 by LaxPower, was named All-Section and Westchester Journal News honorable mention, and won a Sportsmanship Award at the State final game.

Lade was a three-year member of the varsity lacrosse team at Morristown High School where she was named Best Offensive Player as the leading scorer during her sophomore and junior seasons. She was also named First Team Iron Hills Conference and All-Morris County.

Bub is a graduate of Walter Panas High School and a four-year varsity letter winner for the Lakeland Panas Rebels. She helped the Rebels win three consecutive Section 1 titles and was named All-League and All-Section honorable mention.

Brancaccio holds the single season scoring record at Norwalk High School with 64 goals. As a junior, she was named All-FCIAC West Conference, Second Team All-State, and Team MVP.

Also joining Iona's lineup will be Maria Ortiz from New Milford, CT. Ortiz earned four varsity letters at New Milford High School, serving as captain in 2010. She was named SWC All-State in 2008 and SWC All-Division in 2009.

Defensive midfielder Angela Grous of Sewell, NJ played at Bishop Eustace Preparatory where she was named First Team All-Conference, First Team All-Group 1, and All-South Jersey Honorable Mention in 2010. She received the same awards in 2009, in addition to Team Defensive MVP.

Defender Kristen Flynn comes to New Rochelle from Mineola, NY. At Holy Trinity High School, Flynn was a 2008 and 2009 All-League player and an Academic All-American in 2009. Iona's final newcomer for the 2011 season is walk-on student-athlete Ashley Bishop.
