Grand Canyon Lacrosse Sets Course for 2011

Grand Canyon University lacrosse head coach Jeff Guy has released the Antelopes' 2011 schedule. The slate features seven home contests, highlighted by a visit from perennial power and two-time defending NCAA Division II Champion, C.W. Post. In addition, the 'Lopes announced their participation in the newly formed five-school Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.

"This is by far the most competitive schedule that the GCU lacrosse team has had in our four-year history." said Guy. "Not only are we playing traditional powerhouses such as C.W. Post and Pace University, but we start the inaugural season of competition in the new Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association."

The WILA schedule will feature home-and-home contests with Dominican University, Notre Dame de Namur University and first-year programs Adams State College and Mesa State College. The WILA will crown a regular season champion and feature weekly award winners and academic All-Americans.

The Antelopes open their spring slate with a pair of scrimmages against in-state foes and MCLA members, University of Arizona on Feb. 5 and Arizona State University on Feb. 12. GCU will host the ASU contest, while no time and location has been set for the UofA scrimmage.

The regular season kicks off with six home contests, starting with Notre Dame de Namur on Feb. 16 at 7:00 p.m. Last season the 'Lopes dropped both of their contests to the Argonauts. The schedule then brings in some eastern flavor with powers Pace University on Feb. 18 at 7:00 p.m. and an afternoon tilt with defending champion C.W. Post on Feb. 19 at 1:00 p.m. The Pioneers have amassed a combined 31-2 record in winning their back-to-back titles. Two of the next three games will bring in WILA members and first year programs Mesa State on Feb. 24 at 7:00 p.m. and Adams State on Mar. 15 at 7:00 p.m. Sandwiched in the middle is a visit from Assumption College on Mar. 10 at 7:00 p.m. The Greyhounds defeated the 'Lopes in Phoenix last season.

The squad then hits the road for six consecutive road games. First up will be a trip to northern California for games at Dominican University on Mar. 26 and Notre Dame de Namur on Mar. 27. The team will then travel east for two contests in West Virginia. GCU will face Wheeling Jesuit University on Apr. 1. It will be the school's second trip to face the Cardinals, losing in 2009. Ohio Valley University introduces lacrosse in 2011 and will play host to the 'Lopes on Apr. 2. The road season concludes in Colorado with return trips to WILA members Mesa State on Apr. 8 and Adams State on Apr. 10.

The regular season will wrap up with a home match on Apr. 17 at 7:00 p.m. against Dominican. The 'Lopes will be in action this Saturday, Oct. 16, with a fall ball scrimmage against the High Heat Lacrosse Club at 7:30 p.m. at the Reach 11 Sports Complex, located at 2425 East Deer Valley Rd. in Phoenix, Ariz.
