Connecticut College Announces Leadership Team for 2011

NEW LONDON, Conn.--Connecticut College head coach David Cornell has announced his leadership team for the upcoming 2011 season.

Michael Derrenberger, a 2010 graduate of Wittenberg University, joins the program for his first season as assistant men's lacrosse coach at the College.

Dan Corcoran and Thomas Nahornick will return for their second season as assistant coaches for the Camels.

This past spring, Derrenberger helped lead the Wittenberg Tigers to a 10-5 record and a share of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championship crown. Wittenberg enjoyed its finest season of lacrosse that culminated with an appearance in the NCAA Championship.

Derrenberger's selfless style of play, versatility and winning attitude earned him the respect of his teammates and coaches. In his senior season, he was honored with the Team Coaches Award and the B-Hulett Award for his commitment to the program.

Corcoran and Nahornick's contributions to the program were instrumental in the success of the 2010 Connecticut College Men's Lacrosse season. The Camels climbed all the way up to #6 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) National Poll, setting a program record with 14 wins en route to their appearance in the second round of the NCAA Lacrosse Championship.

Cornell, the 2010 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Coach of the Year, has also announced his captains for the upcoming 2011 campaign.

Senior midfielders Eric Doran of Pennington, N.J. and Mark Mangano of Basking Ridge, N.J. will be joined by junior defensive midfielder Mike O'Donnell of Winchester, Mass. as team tri-captains.

Doran garnered All-NESCAC honors in a breakout 2010 season for the Camels, ranking second on the squad with 26 goals scored. An All-New England selection in the midfield, Mangano dished out a team-best 15 assists for Connecticut College, adding 14 goals for a total of 29 points.

O'Donnell joined Doran on the All-NESCAC squad, finishing the season with 32 ground balls as one of the Camels' most physical and effective defenders.

Cornell is counting on his captains to set the tone and lead by example on a young team that graduated six talented seniors.

"Leadership is the key to our season," Cornell said. "Leadership, however, doesn't just lie in the hands of these guys. It's up to everyone in this program to lead in one way or another. If we have great leadership and hold one another accountable, we're going to have a successful season. If we don't, we won't. It's that's simple."

The Camels will open the 2011 season Saturday, March 12 with a home game against Trinity College in New London, Conn.
