Valentine Named New St. Mary's (Md.) Lacrosse Coach

St. Mary's City, Md. Scott Devine, the director of Athletics and Recreation at St. Mary's College of Maryland, announced Wednesday afternoon that Lisa Valentine will become the 12th head coach in the 32-year history of the Seahawk women's lacrosse program. Valentine will begin her duties effective immediately.

Valentine replaces Kara Reber, who stepped down after two seasons to become the head coach of the start-up women's lacrosse program at NCAA Division II Florida Southern College in Lakeland.

"It is always difficult to make a head coaching hire midway through the academic year, but we feel very fortunate to be announcing Lisa Valentine as our next head women's lacrosse coach. Lisa has the in-depth knowledge of the sport that we were looking for, and she has worked hard to develop the necessary ties at the high school and club levels in the state of Maryland that will return dividends from a recruiting standpoint", stated Devine.

Valentine commented, "I would like to thank Mr. Devine and President Urgo for the opportunity to lead the St. Mary's College women's lacrosse program. I am excited to join the St. Mary's community and look forward to continuing the great tradition of lacrosse excellence at St. Mary's College."

Valentine comes to St. Mary's from Washington College on the Eastern Shore in Chestertown. She served as an assistant coach for the Shorewomen in the summer of 2008 before being promoted to senior assistant coach and recruiting coordinator the following summer.

"In addition, I would like to say thank you to Washington College athletic director Dr. Bryan Matthews, head coach Julika Blankenship and the rest of the Washington College staff for their support during the last few years."

The 25-year old Stevensville native played lacrosse for Division I perennial powerhouse, University of Maryland, for four years. As a Terrapin, Valentine had the opportunity to make four trips to the NCAA women's lacrosse championship including advancing to the national semifinals as a freshman. She earned a B.A. in economics from Maryland in May 2006.

"Having been a player at the University of Maryland and an assistant coach at Washington College, Lisa has seen the sport from the D-I and D-III levels. We believe her experience base as a player and as a coach has prepared her well for our position. I am extremely happy to introduce Coach Valentine as our head women's lacrosse coach and believe that she is an excellent fit for St. Mary's College and the Seahawk Athletic program", continued Devine.

In August 2006, she took on the role of field hockey and lacrosse coach at her alma mater, Kent Island High School, where Valentine was an all-conference selection in lacrosse during her scholastic years.

Valentine also has a solid background in education, having worked as a teacher for the Huntington Learning Center and as a paraeducator for the Queen Anne's County Board of Education.
