Cougars Start Season Downing Boise State

The 2011 Season for the BYU Men's Lacrosse team got out to a fast start as the Cougars ran by The Boise State Broncos, 17-3, at North University Field on Saturday. BYU moved to 1-0 on the season, while the Broncos fell to 0-1.

The Cougars kicked off the scoring for the 2011 season early as Junior Captain Ted Ferrin (4, 4) found the back of the net at the 10:22 mark of the 1st quarter. Sophomore Kevin Wallace (1, 0) would add to the lead 6 minutes later with an outside shot that beat the Broncos goalie low.

After another quick goal by Ferrin, his second of four on the day, Junior Captain Jared Houghton (2, 3) put in back to back goals to put the Cougars on top 5-0 early in the second quarter. The scoring would contine for the Cougars heading into halftime as Sophomore Pat Matheson (2, 0), Junior Andrew Harding (1, 2), and Sophomore Mickell Walker (2, 0) each found the net for the first time in the young season.

The Cougars headed into half-time up 10-1 after a late man-down goal for Boise State put the Broncos on the board for the first time.

"We preached one thing about this game" said Assistant Coach Jordan Harris. "It doesn't matter who, where, or when we play, we play the BYU brand of lacrosse. It took a few minutes to get going, but coming into half we felt like we were playing our game."

The tempo slowed considerably coming out of halftime, and after the third quarter only 2 additional tallies had been added to the board, both for BYU.

"That wasn't exactaly how we wanted to come out of halftime, but we recognized we were in a funk," said Harris. "To start the fourth the captains told the team that they had to come out fast and learn to break out of those types of situations."

The team responded in quick fashion to the encouragement of the captains as Walker put in his second goal of the game just 10 seconds into the fourth quarter. The barrage would continue as the Cougars added five goals to their total in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter to help seal the victory.

"It was a great game to iron out the kinks and get ready for a great a year," said Ferrin. "Personally, and as a team, we need to bring it every game and play our best from the opening face-off every game. We brought it today, and we are going to bring it the rest of the year"

"It was a great way to start the 2011 season," said Head Coach Matt Schneck. "We are very proud of the way we played and it was a great opportunity to put together a to-do list before we head to California. The focus now shifts to Loyola Marymount."

The Cougars have next week off before they head to California for a three game stint over Presidents Day Weekend. They take on Loyola Marymount, California, and Claremont College.
