Guilford Storms Past Shorter in Season Opener

GREENSBORO, N.C. Ken Keesee scored three times to lead Guilford College past Shorter University, 15-2, in the Quakers' men's lacrosse season opener Saturday.

The victory marked the first at Guilford for head coach Tom Carmean, who took over the Quakers' post last summer after 11 seasons on the Amherst College sidelines.

Guilford (1-0) had 10 different goal scorers in the win over the first-year Hawks (1-1), which opened their season less than a day earlier with a victory over Southern Virginia University. Henry Farley, Chris Sisk and Taylor Teodosio all scored two goals apiece for Guilford. Teammate Chris Ashcraft added a goal and two assists.

Quakers goalie Mark Guillen played into the 56th minute before giving way for Blade Cruickshank's netminding debut. Guillen made seven saves and scooped up four ground balls. Sophomore Sam Newland won 12 of 17 face-offs and picked up a game-best six ground balls.

Jeffrey Gerlitz made 14 saves in goal for Shorter. Kyle Morris and Cole Tesh scored the Hawks' goals.

Guilford entertains another first-year team, Ferrum College, Friday at 4:00 p.m. in the Armfield Athletic Center.
