Ohio Wesleyan Routs Fontbonne in Opener

DELAWARE, Ohio -- Sophomore midfielder Drew Scharf (Redding, Conn./Barlow), sophomore midfielder Pat Bassett (Naperville, Ill./North), and sophomore attacker Colin Short (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) scored 2 goals apiece as Ohio Wesleyan built a 9-0 halftime lead and went on to post a regional win over Fontbonne in the Bishops' season opener on Saturday at Selby Field.

Scharf put the Bishops on the scoreboard courtesy of an assist by freshman attacker Casey Helms (Sandwich, Mass./Bridgton Academy) midway through the first half, and after a score by freshman midfielder Spencer Schnell (Dublin/Jerome), it was Scharf with another score for a 3-0 Bishop lead after the first quarter.

Bassett scored twice and Short contributed 2 goals and an assist during the second quarter as Ohio Wesleyan extended its lead to 9-0 at the intermission.

Schnell found junior attacker A.J. Pellis (Edmonton, Alberta/St. Francis Xavier) in the first minute of the second half to open the second-half scoring.

Fontbonne's Peter Travis scored off a Zac Moore assist on the ensuing faceoff to put the Griffins on the board, but the Bishops put the game out of reach by scoring the next 7 goals, including 3 straight man-down goals early in the fourth period.

Short led the Bishops with 3 goals and 2 assists, while Scharf finished with 3 goals. Bassett and Schnell each contributed 2 goals and an assist.

Sophomore Stephen Ford (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) played the first 49-plus minutes in the Ohio Wesleyan crease, making 1 save.

Senior Frank Weschler (Wilmette, Ill./Loyola Academy) and freshman Trevor Olson (Sammamish, Wash./Eastlake) each saw action during the fourth quarter.
