Middle Atlantic Conference Preseason Poll

Annville, PA A team which possesses the rich history Widener does naturally enters any season with high expectations. This is the case in 2011, as men's lacrosse returns with plenty of talent and looks to repeat as Middle Atlantic Conference champions. Last Season the Pride captured their 12th MAC title, while overcoming a slew of injuries, to become the first team to win three tournament games on the road.

That strong play starts with senior Nick Politarhos, who is coming back from injury to help one of the league's top defenses. A two-time Honorable Mention Preseason All-America, he also is a two-time first team All-MAC pick, and helps the Pride consistently be among the league's elite in goals against average.

Midfield always has been a strong point for Widener, and this season will be no different. Senior Andrew Janusz has been a solid player the last three years, and last season was rewarded by being named second team all-league. He ended fourth on the team with 14 goals and fifth with 19 points.

A key player back on the frontline is sophomore Johnny Casey, who in 2009 was tabbed the league's Rookie of the Year, and missed all of 2010 due to injury. Among the league's leaders in almost every statistical category that season, his solid play and desire to win will play a big role this season.

Sophomore Bobby Schulter stepped in as the number one goalkeeper last season and was a big part of the team's success. He finished 2010 with a 7.27 goals against average, but more importantly stepped up when the team needed him. In the fourth quarter of the MAC final at FDU-Florham he made seven saves.

Widener opens its season February 26 at home against SUNY Cortland, a team which won its second national championship in 2009 and is picked second in many preseason national polls. The Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament begins May 2 with first round games, followed by semifinal games May 4, and the championship game on May 7. All tournament games are at the campus of the higher seed.
