Second Quarter Explosion Lifts NDNU Past Grizzlies

BELMONT, Calif.- A 9-goal second quarter explosion broke open what was a 2-2 tie game after 15 minutes and allowed the Notre Dame de Namur (Calif.) Argonauts to take sole possession of the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association lead with a 21-5 win over the visiting Adams State College Grizzlies, Saturday afternoon.

The Argos, who were playing at home for the first time this season, had 10 different goal scorers, including eight who scored two or more, as they improved to 2-2 overall and to 2-0 in WILA play. The Grizzlies received two goals from co-captain Johnny Neal (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and a goal and an assistant from fellow co-captain Kevin Bertrand (Steamboat Springs, Colo.), but fell to 0-2 overall and to 0-2 in WILA play in this their inaugural season.

Chanson Miller (American Fork, Utah), Chris Cunningham (Littleton, Colo.) and Chris Ruffin (Virginia Beach, Va.) also scored for the Grizzlies, who took their first ever lead on Miller's fifth goal of the weekend 5:33 into the game.

After the Argos tied it at 1, Cunningham scored with 1:51 left in the first period, a goal that was answered just 23 seconds later by NDNU's Nate Jackson.

The Argos then used a man-up goal by Kevin Nguyen, tied for the WILA lead in goals scored with 6, to take a 3-2 lead and doubled the advantage to 4-2 with 12:03 left in the half on a Greg Bearson tally.

After Peter Santamaria (Orem, Utah) responded for the Grizzlies, NDNU scored 17 of the final 19 games to pos the win.

The Argos took 47 shots on the afternoon compared to the Grizzlies' 18 and had a 40-13 edge in groundballs. They also won 20 of the game's 29 faceoffs.

Hunter Adams made six saves in the first three quarters to earn the win in net for the Argos while Dakota Hunter (Denver, Colo.) made 13 saves for the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies will now return home to Colorado to play the University of Colorado's Club Team in the third and final exhibition game next Saturday (Mar. 5) and will then resume NCAA Division II regular season play against Assumption (Mass.) in Phoenix, Ariz. on Mar. 12.
