Howard Howard Nips Marywood in Overtime

Washington, D.C. Division I Howard University scored with just 23 seconds to play in the second overtime period to lift the Bison to a 15-14 win over Marywood University in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon. The victory lifts the Bison's record to 2-3 on the young season while the Pacers finish their season-opening Spring Break trip with a 1-1 mark.

Howard built a 5-0 lead over the first 12:43 of Wednesday's contest before Marywood rattled off four consecutive goals to close the half and trail by a slim, 5-4 margin at the intermission. Allie Sodl started the Pacers' run with an unassisted tally at the 15:36 mark of the first half and Diana D'Achille scored just over three minutes later. Taylor McKeown netted the final two goals of the half for the Pacers.

The Bison opened the second half with a 4-0 run to reclaim a five-goal cushion at 9-4 when Courtland Lackey scored unassisted with 22:16 left on the clock. Marywood's Kimberly Commisso countered just 13 seconds later and D'Achille and McKeown followed with goals of their own to make the score 9-7 with 19:58 to play. Liz Fowler assisted on McKeown's third goal of the game to record the first point of her collegiate career.

The two teams traded goals over the next eight minutes and with Howard holding a 12-10 lead, the Pacers got back-to-back goals from Commisso and McKeown to level the score for the first time since the game's opening draw with 6:20 to play. The Bison went back in front on a goal by Cheryse Cox with 3:11 to play, but McKeown scored her fifth goal of the game with 1:28 remaining to force overtime.

Commisso gave Marywood their first lead of the game 30 seconds into overtime with her fifth goal of the game, but the Bison drew even when Desiree Cox scored at the 2:39 mark. Cox would then net the game-winning goal, her sixth tally of the game, on a free position shot with just 23 seconds left in the second overtime as the Pacers were unable to find the equalizer in the closing seconds.

McKeown and Commisso finished with five goals to lead Marywood's attack while Sodl and D'Achille scored twice apiece. Megan Planz went the distance in the Pacers' cage and made 13 saves in the loss.

Howard held a 40-31 advantage in shots for the game and a 20-13 edge in draw controls while Marywood won the groundball battle by a 17-14 margin.

Marywood returns to action next Wednesday when they travel to Oneonta, NY to take on Hartwick College in a non-conference game scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
