Mount Saint Vincent Drops Season Opener to Cobleskill

Yonkers, N.Y. The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Lacrosse team opened the 2011 season on Tuesday night with a 13-8 loss to visiting Cobleskill. Three Dolphins recorded a pair of points in the contest, with senior captain Cavan Valance (Glen Cove, N.Y.) leading the Mount with two goals.

The first half on Tuesday was a back and forth affair that saw the two teams head into halftime tied at 7-7. After Bryan Stein (Larchmont, N.Y.) opened the scoring for the Dolphins, Peter Gonzalez scored three of the next four goals for the Tigers as they took a 3-2 lead into the second period.

After the two teams traded tallies to open the second, Cobleskill ran off three straight in a little over a minute of play to open a 7-4 lead. Mount Saint Vincent would rally in the latter stages of the second quarter with three straight of its own to tie the score after 30 minutes, including the first of the season for Mike Shea (Congers, N.Y.), Matt DeSimone (Congers, N.Y.) and Miller Celestin (Brooklyn, N.Y.)

Coming out of halftime Derek Valance (Glen Cove, N.Y.) gave the Dolphins their first lead since 1-0 at the 8:44 mark of the third, but that would prove to be the Mount's only tally of the second half. Cobleskill would go on to outscore the Dolphins 6-1 after halftime, including 3-0 in the fourth quarter.

Gonzalez and Hank Delisle led all players on the night with six points each for the Tigers. Gonzalez scored five goals and added an assist, while Delisle tallied four times and helped on two others. In all Cobleskill had five players record at least two points and four different players score a goal.

Cavan Valance was the only Mount Saint Vincent player to score more then once on the night and he also added three groundballs. Shea added an assist to his marker and junior Rowan Frederick (Brooklyn, N.Y.) picked up two assists on the night.

Alex Bendon led all players with 11 groundballs for Cobleskill, while Kevin Whitcomb and Shawn Curtis each picked up seven. Larry Caputo (Hicksville, N.Y.) led the Dolphins in the category with six.

Cobleskill dominated the face-off category on Tuesday as it won 16 of the 24 taken. Corey Tizzio won all 16 for the Tigers and added a pair of groundballs. Chris Guastamacchia (Monroe, N.Y.) led the Dolphins with six wins.

Each goalie also had a solid showing in the season opener, with Kyle Kalibat (Oceanside, N.Y.) recording eight saves and picking up three groundballs. His counterpart Tom Knezick made 14 stops for the Tigers.

Overall in the game, Mount Saint Vincent held the edge in shots 39-33, while the Tigers picked up 46 groundballs to 42 for the Dolphins. Cobleskill was 13 for 16 in clearing opportunities, while the Mount went 12 for 21.

The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 0-1 overall on the season. The Dolphins will be back in action again on March 13 when they play the second of six straight home games after Saturday's game at Centenary was postponed. Face-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
