Rangers Dethrone Monarchs in Opener

MADISON, N.J. (March 2, 2011) - Drew opened up its 2011 campaign with a 11-4 drubbing of King's College this afternoon at Ranger Stadium. Freshman Andrew Somps (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) scored two goals and assisted on four others in the season-opening victory.

Drew (1-0) never trailed in the contest and jumped out to a 3-1 first period lead. Somps found sophomore Scott Humphreys (Newark, Del./Sanford School) and Craig Wagenblast (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) for the games first two goals.

After a King's (1-1) goal with 6:21 left in the first period, the Rangers would go on to score the next five goals. The Rangers found themselves with an 8-1 advantage midway through the third period before the Monarchs finally put another goal up on the scoreboard at the 5:27 mark. Somps scored both of his goals during the five-goal run and dished off one of his four assists.

Junior Sean McGowan (Milltown, N.J/Saint Joseph's) would help close the door on the Monarchs by registering the game's final three goals. The attackman was 12-15 on faceoffs and scooped up a game-high 11 ground balls. The hat trick was the first of his career.

In front of the net Charlie DeSocio (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) logged all 60 minutes for the Rangers, making a total of five saves for his first win of the year. Freshman Mike O'Brien was the high-man for the Monarchs, registering two goals on three shots.
