Medaille Victorious in Season Opener vs. Thiel

Greenville, PA Medaille opened the 2011 season on the road as they faced Thiel (1-2) in a non-conference matchup. The Mavs dominated the game but showed opening day rust in a (17-7) win. The Mavs outshot the Tomcats (66-15) but ran into a goaltender that came up with a staggering (31) saves.

Leading the way for Medaille was senior Joe Glieco (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) who poured in a game high five goals and assisted on another, for a six point outing. Glieco took (12) shots on the day, (11) of which were on goal.

Senior Charlie Coogan (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) dominated at the faceoff square, winning (17 of 25) draws, which created many extra offensive possesions for the Mavs. Coogan also scooped up (8) ground balls on the day.

Freshman Brock Levick (Newmarket, ONT/Huron Heights) sparkled in his career opener as he found the back of the net four times and assisted on another, finishing with five points. Senior Jim Luthart (Amherst, NY/Amherst) netted a goal and dished out a pair of assists in the victory. Junior defensive middie Caleb Higgins (Clarence, NY/Clarence) battled for a game high (9) ground balls. The Mavs dominated Thiel on loose balls, gathering in (56) to just (37) for the home team.

The win opens Medaille's season at (1-0) and they will head down South for spring break on Friday. Next up for Medaille is another non-conference tilt against Misericordia University on Sunday (3/6) at 3:30 pm in Myrtle Beach, SC.
