Lynchburg Wins Battle of Hornets with Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. Visiting Lynchburg College won the women's lacrosse battle of the Hornets Wednesday night with a 16-4 non-league victory over Shenandoah.

The LC Hornets (1-0) got a Lesley Buckingham goal just 35 seconds into the contest and never looked back against SU (0-2).

Freshman Samantha Sisson scored Shenandoah's opening tally with a free position goal at 25:59, but coach Lindsey West's club would get no closer than one goal the rest of the way. Lynchburg answered Sisson's tally with 10 of the next 12 goals to take a commanding 11-3 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the first.

Melissa Morgan finally stopped this run with a goal off of a Jennie Ott assist at 4:08 before LC closed the half with goals at 1:57 and 1:25. A three-goal Lynchburg run at the start of the second pushed the advantage to 11 and LC closed out the scoring with goals at 5:14 and :46.

Lynchburg outshot SU 33-7 and scooped up 28 of the game's 46 groundballs. Shenandoah keeper Ashley Cross made nine saves.

The SU Hornets open up USA South Conference play this weekend with games at Agnes Scott on Saturday and LaGrange on Monday.
