Maritime Loses Home Opener to St. Thomas Aquinas

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 3, 2011) The Maritime women's lacrosse team lost to non-conference, Division II opponent St. Thomas Aquinas College, 17-6, Wednesday in the squad's first home game of the 2011 season at Reinhart Field. With the loss, the Privateers fall to 0-1 overall (0-0 Skyline), while the Spartans improve to 1-0 overall (0-0 ECC).

Senior Jill Davenport (Miller Place, N.Y.) had a hat trick and an assist, while junior Catherine Brady (Holbrook, N.Y.) had two goals and four ground balls. Senior Christina George (Southold, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for the Privateers, while registering two ground balls and a caused turnover.

Defensively, freshman Giuliana Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) led with four ground balls and one caused turnover. Goalie Courtney Marietta (Grantville, P.A.) registered two ground balls and six saves.

For the Spartans, Anne Buffafuoco led in goals with six while Stephanie Brown registered five. STAC led the game in ground balls with twenty and caused turnovers with six. Goalie Jeanette Gibson had six saves in the game.

The Privateers return to action Saturday, March 5, when they host Wells College. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
