Hood Drops Decision to Visiting Ferrum

FREDERICK, Md.--Despite a career-high-tying four-goal effort by junior Julia Banks, the Hood College women's lacrosse team (1-3) fell to the visiting Ferrum College Panthers (2-0-1) Thursday afternoon by a count of 22-6 at Thomas Athletic Field.

Ferrum's Anna Wheeler registered back-to-back scores just 42 seconds apart to stake the guests to a 2-0 lead within the first four minutes of the opening half. But Banks took a feed from Kelsey Blackwell and pocketed her fifth goal of the season less than a minute later to cut the deficit in half.

Wheeler struck again with an unassisted score three minutes later but Banks countered with another tally off an assist from Caitlin Lawrence to make it 3-2.

Brooke Hewartson and Courtney Hamm got into the scoring column with unassisted goals to give Ferrum a 5-2 lead, but Banks had the hot stick and netted her third score of the afternoon midway through the period.

The Panthers would then reel off six unanswered goals to assume an 11-3 advantage with 11:57 remaining in the period. Banks and Blackwell notched unassisted tallies for Hood, which trailed 15-5 at intermission.

Hood's lone score of the second half came off the stick of Kati Vu, who cashed in on a free position attempt 4:31 into the second half.

Hewartson finished with a game-high eight goals and three assists while Wheeler contributed five goals and Courtney Hamm and Cara Jacobs had four apiece. Phylicia Garner chipped in with her fifth goal of the spring to account for the final margin.

Helene Butler turned away eight Panther attempts for Hood while Velena Taylor made 12 stops between the pipes for Ferrum.

Blackwell needs just two more points to tie former temmate Brandy Noel '10 for the career scoring lead. Following today's game, Blackwell has 120 points (81 goals, 39 assists), just two away from Noel's record of 122 points (103 goals, 19 assists).

The Blazers hit the road Saturday for a nonconference game at Washington & Jefferson at 2:00 p.m.
