Shepherd Runs Past Ferrum in Home Opener

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. Sophomore attack Nicole Ruane (Sykesville, MD/Century) and freshman attack/midfielder Shannon Carta (Davidsonville, MD/South River) each scored five goals to lift Shepherd to an 18-7 win over Ferrum in action on Friday in the home opener for the Rams.

Carta added three assists for the Rams, while sophomore attack/midfielder Krista Tippett (Leonardtown, MDLeonardtown) tallied three goals and a pair of assists.

The Panthers were led by Brooke Hewartson with three goals and an assist. Courtney Hamm added two goals and an assist.

Shepherd scored the last five goals in the first half to take an 11-3 lead into the break.

Shepherd also got single goals from senior midfielder/attack Kaitlin Drake (Ellicott City, MD/River Hill), sophomore attack/midfielder Maddie Sullivan (Abingdon, MD/Institute of Notre Dame), freshman attack/midfielder Kelsey Eagan(Baltimore, MD/Sparrows Point), freshman attack Jenna Benke (Baltimore, MD/Mercy), and freshman attack Jenny Cavey (Sykesville, MD/Westminster).

Shepherd had a 34-18 shots advantage and a 26-20 edge in ground balls. The Rams had a 14-12 advantage in draw controls.

Freshman netminder Emily Melanson (Davidsonville, MD/South River) had three saves for the Rams, while Velena Taylor had 11 saves for the Panthers.

Shepherd improves to 2-0, while Ferrum falls to 2-1-1. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Wilmington (Del.) for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
