Saporito's Six Goals Powers Privateers Past Wells

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 5, 2011) Junior Kristen Saporito (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) scored a career-high six goals and added an assist to lead Maritime to a 10-7 victory over visiting Wells Saturday afternoon at Reinhart Field. The win, the Privateers' first over Wells in four meetings, improves the squad's record to an even 1-1 overall, while the Express falls the same 1-1 mark.

Saporito also picked up six ground balls to lead all players. Junior Catherine Brady (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) recorded two goals and one assist, while senior Jill Davenport (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) also scored twice to round out the Maritime tallies. In net, sophomore Courtney Marietta (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) stood tall when her team needed her in the second half and finished with nine saves. Senior Christina George (Southold, N.Y./Southold) contributed with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

The Privateers fell behind early, as Wells scored two quick goals in the first six minutes of the game. Davenport got Maritime on the board when she found the twine at 19:12 and Brady added the equalizer at 17:16 off a pass by Saporito. Saporito scored the next two, the second on a free position shot, to give the Privateers a 4-2 lead. The Express responded less than a minute later, but Saporito tallied two more just over two minutes apart and Brady added a late score to send Maritime into the locker up 7-3.

Wells scored quickly to start the second half and applied a lot of pressure early. After Maritime called a timeout when the Express scored to make it 8-5, Wells would score again to pull within two goals with 22:05 to play. However, excellent clock management and stellar defending and goaltending for the Privateers help to preserve the victory down the stretch as two straight goals by Saporito provided the insurance.

Maritime returns to action on Thursday, March 10, when the squad travels to Somerset, N.J., to take on the College of Saint Elizabeth. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Screaming Eagles' Field.
