Swarthmore Dominates Notre Dame in Season Opener

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Sophomore Annalise Penikis (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) had a Swarthmore debut to remember, scoring five first-half goals and adding three assists to lead the Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team (1-0) to a convincing 17-4 victory over Notre Dame College (Md.) in its season debut from Clothier Field on Saturday morning.

Junior Annelise Mowry was right behind Penikis, scoring four goals while senior captain Emily Evans added three goals. Freshman Corinne Sommi also had an impressive Garnet debut, dishing out five assists, causing three turnovers, picking up five ground balls and scoring her first goal.

Junior Marie Mutryn finished with two goals and an assist, while sophomore Samantha Panepinto and freshman Emma Sipperly also found the back of the net to round out the scoring.

Despite surrendering the first goal of the contest, the Garnet totally outclassed the Gators (0-1), maintaining significant advantages in shots (26-9), shots on goal (24-6) and ground balls (38-13). After trailing 1-0 thanks to an early goal from Notre Dame's Allison Terry, Swat responded in big way, scoring eight unanswered goals over a six-minute span to give the Garnet a commanding 8-1 lead just nine minutes into the game.

The Gators stopped the Garnet run with a free position goal at the 16:27 mark, but it was just minor blip for Swat, as the Garnet proceeded to score seven more goals over the next seven minutes. Penikis' final goal of the game - one in which she got open by crossing up a Gator defender so badly that she ended up on the turf - made it a 15-3 game and essentially sealed the contest.

In net for the Garnet, freshman Michelle Ammerman made two saves in her first collegiate start.

Freshman Morgan Bartz added an assist for Swarthmore.

Sophomore Nicole Vanchieri finished with a team-high seven ground balls. Sommi and sophomore Beth Martin were right behind with five apiece.

Freshman Lucy Whitacre finished with three caused turnovers and three ground balls.

Immediately following the game, the Garnet packed up and headed west for its Spring Break trip to Colorado. Swarthmore returns to action on Tuesday at Colorado College, with action beginning at 5:30 (EST).
