Mercy Wins Season Opener Over Chestnut Hill
The Mercy College women's lacrosse team won its season opener today at Chestnut Hill College, 16-10. The Mavericks (1-0) never trailed in the game, and led 8-4 at the half.
Freshman sensation Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) paced the Mavericks with four goals and two assists. Sophomores Marissa Hurley (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) and Kelsey Sullivan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) each recorded two goals and three assists.
Znaniecki opened the scoring at the 28:07 mark, taking a pass from Sullivan. CHC's Kelly Campbell tied the score barely two minutes later, before a three-goal run put Mercy up for good. Mercy had 10 assists on its 16 goals.
Also scoring multiple times were freshmen Meesha Robinson (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) and Tracey Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) with a pair apiece.
Sophomore Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) made her debut in goal, stopping 14 shots. Leading the Griffins (0-1) was Nicole Covella, who had five goals.
Mercy has a busy week with three games, hosting Holy Family on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. at Manhattanville College. Mercy travels to Southern Connecticut on Thursday before hosting Millersville next weekend.
