Fast Start Helps Wellesley Get Past Big Blue in Opener

EXETER, N.H. -- Senior Jenny Holland (Bethesda, Md.) found the back of the cage seven times to help pace Wellesley College in a 21-11 season-opening victory over the University of New England in non-conference women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Phelps Field on the campus of Phillips Exeter Academy.

First-year Britt Mscisz (Topsfield, Mass.) added four tallies for the Blue (1-0), while sophomore Ashley Robbins (North Bennington, Vt.) contributed two goals and four assists.

Scores came early and often during the initial stages of the contest, as Wellesley surged out to a 5-1 lead 4:50 into the game. Five different players recorded markers during that time.

The cushion increased to 9-1 midway through the period, before UNE (0-1) reeled off five unanswered goals to make it 9-6 late in the frame. A Wellesley score with 10 seconds left in the half pushed the margin to four (10-6) at the break.

The Blue slowly pulled away after halftime, out-scoring the Nor'easters, 11-5, to win going away.

Wellesley senior goalie Mary Mattia (Atlanta, Ga.) recorded seven stops in the game, while her counterpart, firsty-year Samantha St. Pierre (Mechanic Falls, Maine) also posted seven saves.

Classmates Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) and Sadie MacLean (Henniker, N.H.) led the attack for UNE, notching four and three goals, respectively. Sophomore Cara Cole (Norwood, Mass.) racked up a match-best five assists.

Both squad are back in action Tuesday, with Wellesley hosting Roger Williams University and the Nor'easters taking on the University of Southern Maine (4:00 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland).
