Bloomsburg Hangs on in Final Seconds to Nip Bentley
WALTHAM, Mass. – Bloomsburg goalie Shelby Iezzi saved a free-position shot from Bentley's Cori Geiger (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) with five seconds remaining to preserve an 11-10 win over the Falcons Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.
After a Bloomsburg clearing attempt from its own zone failed, Bentley took over possession with 18 seconds remaining. They ran the ball down into their attacking half, and Geiger drew a foul to setup the free-position attempt. Geiger shot low, but Iezzi made the save and smothered the ball as the Huskies hung on for the win.
Bentley went into halftime trailing 6-4 and fell behind 8-4 on two goals by Kelsey Metzler; the first one came 1:59 into the second half and the second came with 11 minutes gone in the half.
The Falcons though scored four of the next five goals, a run capped by Carolyn Kynoch's (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) goal with 12:16 to play that cut the deficit to 9-8.
Nearly seven minutes elapsed before the next goal was scored, but Bloomsburg's Tia Mazzie got it with 5:46 to play to make it 10-8. Geiger scored her fifth of the game with 3:56 remaining to make it a one-goal deficit again, before Mazzie scored her second, pushing the lead to 11-9.
Dovlyn Curtis (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) scored off a Bloomsburg turnover with 1:06 left to make it 11-10 and set up the final sequence.
Iezzi made 10 saves for the win as Bloomsburg improves to 2-1 on the season. The Falcons fall to 0-2. They're back in action on March 14 against Shepherd in St. Petersburg, Fla.
