No. 11 Washington and Lee Shuts out Hollins
LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 11 Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team scored 14 first half goals and never looked back as it ran away with a 21-0 win over Hollins University on Tuesday afternoon at Watt Field.
Seven different Generals' players found the net in the opening 30 minutes, including multiple-goal performances by first-year Meredith Lavin (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East), sophomore midfielder Ashley Barnes (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's), senior attacker Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) and first-year attacker Katie Hagen (West Chester, Pa./Notre Dame).
Lavin registered three goals in the opening half, while Barnes, Megargel and Hagen added two goals apiece as the Generals opened a 14-0 lead at the break and cruised to the 21-0 win to improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in ODAC competition.
In the contest, the Generals were led by Hagen who finished with four goals. First-year attacker Kerstin Hjelm (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) aded three goals and an assist, while Barnes finished with three goals, Megargel with two goals and an assist and first-year midfielder Kelsey Cotter (Roanoke, Va./Salem) chipped in a goal and two assists.
W&L keepers sophomore Alex Hamill (Darien, Conn./Darien) and first-year Katie Bennett (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) split time in net, with Hamill earning the win. Hollins (1-2, 0-2) keepers sophomoreKelly Sheehan (Haymarket, Va./Stonewall Jackson) and junior Jacqui Sommerman (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) also shared time in net, with Sheehan taking the loss in 46:57 of action while registering 10 saves.
W&L returns to action on Friday as it hosts No. 1 Salisbury at 1:00 pm.
