Bub's Seven Goals Propel Mercy Past Holy Family

Behind seven goals from freshman Kelsey Bub, the Mercy College women's lacrosse team (2-0) defeated visiting Holy Family University 20-9 on Tuesday afternoon. The Mavericks scored six straight goals early in the second half to put the game away.

Mercy College, playing only the second game of its second season, started slowly. Bub (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) scored the game's first goal, unassisted, seven and a half minutes into play. A free position goal by HFU's Stephanie McNesby tied the game with 16:29 remaining.

Mercy opened up a 4-1 lead, with a 3-0 run, over the next five and a half minutes. HFU remained in the game, tallying back-to-back goals. The score was 4-3 in favor of Mercy with 6:04 to play. Freshman Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comewogue) cut the Tiger run, giving Mercy a two goal margin.

Sophomores Marissa Hurley (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) and Kelsey Sullivan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) scored on free position shots, and Mercy now led 7-3. The teams traded goals in the final minute of the half, and Mercy led 8-4 at the break.

Sullivan recorded her third goal of the game to open scoring in the second stanza. Three straight goals by Holy Family, including back-to-back markers from Gina Mansi, cut the lead back to two goals at 9-7. Mercy then went on a 6-0 run, which was part of a larger 10-1 run, and the game was salted away.

Leading the way for Mercy was Bub, who added two assists to her seven goals. Znaniecki finished the day with four goals and two assists. Also scoring multiple goals were Hurley and Sullivan with three each, while freshman Tracey Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) added two.

In goal, sophomore Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) made 13 saves to earn the win.

The sloppy game saw HFU (1-0) commit 52 fouls, while taking six yellow cards. Mercy had 22 fouls, and three yellows.

The Mavericks return to action on Thursday, March 10, traveling to Southern Connecticut.
