Clarkson Takes Overtime Victory at Brockport

Junior Eric Gollands (Chelmsford, MA) scored off an assist from classmate Bryan Huff (Hillsborough, NJ) 49 seconds into the second overtime period to lift the Clarkson University Lacrosse team to an 8-7 victory over Brockport State at Hantz Turf Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Huff, who was named a Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week on Tuesday, led all scorers with three points, including two goals. Senior Tyler Long (Liverpool, NY) also scored twice for the Green and Gold. Junior Matt Cyr (Cheshire, CT), grad student Mike Fowler (Modena, NY) and senior Mitch Collins (Baldwinsville, NY) also scored goals for the Knights. Sophomore Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY) recorded two assists.

Andy Hilton and Matt Andon-McLane scored two goals apiece to pace Brockport. Clarkson outshot the Eagles 35-24 and held a 28-26 edge in groundballs.

Sophomore Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) made eight saves in the Clarkson goal along with recording one assist. Senior Mike Simmons (Clinton, CT) picked up a team-high four groundballs for the Knights.

Clarkson and Brockport (0-2) battled in a tight defensive game with the Knights scoring the final two goals to gain the victory.

Clarkson held a 3-2 lead after the opening 20 minutes and made it 5-2 late in the second quarter. The Golden Eagles tallied twice late in the half to pull within one at the break, and then tied the game 5-5 early in the second half.

With just one second remaining in the third quarter, the Knights went back on top when Collins took a long clearing pass from Cole and whipped in a shot just before the period ended. The Eagles answered back with the first two scores of the fourth quarter to take their first lead since early in the contest when Bryon Palmer and Andon-McLane tallied to give the visitors a 7-6 advantage with 9:03 to play.

With 4:43 remaining, Long evened the score at 7-7 with the final goal of regulation.

After a scoreless first, four-minute sudden-victory overtime period, Gollands scored the game-winner shortly after Clarkson had killed off a penalty.

The Golden Knights, who are 2-0 to open the 2011 campaign, host St. John Fisher this Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
