Colorado College Rallies to Edge Swarthmore

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Colorado College erased a three-goal deficit early in the second half to record a 13-11 victory over Swarthmore College on Wednesday afternoon at CC's Stewart Field.

Sarah Phillips tied the game at 9-9 on her first goal with 10:11 to play, and then put the Tigers ahead to stay when she converted on a free-position shot 2:28 later to help Colorado College improve to 2-0.

Elise Burchard ignited a 7-1 run 5:20 into the second half with her second goal and then set up Anna Crosby's game winner with 4:28 remaining on the clock.

Annelise Penikis struck for three of her five goals and added an assist during a 6-1 spurt that gave the Garnet a 7-4 lead with a little more than eight minutes to play in the first half.

The Tigers got a much-needed lift when Hadley Bergh took a cross-field pass from Kelsey Morell and scored on a one-timer from just outside the left post with 24.8 seconds to go.

Swarthmore took an 8-5 when Nicole Vanchieri found the net 2:37 into the second half, but CC responded by scoring seven of the next eight goals. That outburst gave the Tigers their first lead since SC's Corinne Sommi tied contest at 3-3 with the first of her three goals with 21:31 remaining in the first half.

Sophomore goaltender Abby Fink gave Colorado College a chance to come back by making 10 of her 16 saves during the second half, six of which came on free-position shots. It marked the seventh time she has recorded double-digit wins and 16 is the most she has recorded during one of her 10 career victories.

Grace Maloney paced the Tigers with four goals, while Burchard finished with two scores and a pair of assists.

Swarthmore finished with a 27-20 advantage in shots on goal and a 32-26 edge in total shots. The Garnet also won 15 of 26 draw controls.

Michelle Ammerman stopped seven shots for the Garnet, which slipped to 1-1.

Colorado College plays host to the College of Wooster on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
