Saint Leo Survives Wingate in DSC Showdown

Saint Leo, Fla.---Behind a six-goal, two-assist effort from freshman attack Matt Obermeyer, Saint Leo (4-1 overall, 2-0 DSC) remained undefeated in the Deep South Conference, defeating Wingate 11-8 Wednesday evening at the University Field. Wingate is 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the DSC.

Joining Obermeyer in the Lions' scoring column was Connor McBride as he added two goals and two assists. George Proechel punched in a goal and led the squad with three assists, while Alex Monteferrante notched his second goal of the season. Wingate's Colin O'Donoghue led the Bulldogs with four goals and one helper. Derek Watts found the target twice, while David Lee and Garrett Kendall also found the back of the net.

In the face-off circle, the Lions duo of Mike Del Buono and Ty Trombley won 15 of 24 challenges. Bryce Sneed did the majority of the damage for Wingate as he won eight of the nine face-offs for the Bulldogs.

In goal, Lions goalkeeper Patrick Berry collected 12 saves as he improved to 3-1 overall on the year. For Wingate, Danny Dlugozima posted 14 saves in 60 minutes of action. The loss dropped his record to 3-3 overall.

Saint Leo will return to action on Saturday, March 12 when they host Catawba in DSC action. Face-off is set for 1:00 p.m. at the University Field. Wingate returns to North Carolina for its next contest. The Bulldogs will host DSC newcomer Lenoir-Rhyne University Saturday at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field. The first face-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
