Girls' Lacrosse: Weekend Preview for March 11-12

It's a clash of girls' lacrosse titans this weekend as Milton (GA) takes on Vero Beach (FL) at the Citrus Bowl (Vero Beach).

Vero Beach enters Friday's contest on the heels of five consecutive wins to open up the 2011 campaign. However, the team's winning streak doesn't begin there. The Indians have won 43 games in a row, an impressive run that dates back to the 09 season. Behind standouts Courtney Swan and Erin Schroeder, the Indians have an average margin of victory of 17.4 this season despite facing three teams with winning records.

However, that's all likely to change this weekend as Vero Beach faces its toughest test yet in Milton. The Eagles (3-0) are riding the coattails of a 2010 state championship that saw the team win convincingly over fellow Georgia rival Lassiter, 14-4.

So far in '11, Milton is looking as strong as ever. The Eagles have posted three wins in dominating fashion, including a 16-3 victory over Lassiter in a finals rematch last week. The talented squad also features a number of Division I recruits, most notably standouts Amanda Lockwood (Vanderbilt) and Heather Harman (Penn State). The Eagles are chomping at the bit to end the Indians' win streak, so expect a back-and-forth affair that figures to be fast-paced and exciting.

On Saturday, Milton will follow up against a strong Park Vista (FL) program that's off to a fast start this season. Having already defeated traditional strong programs Barron Collier and Lake Mary in 11, the Cobras (5-1) are now looking for an upset of their own in South Florida this weekend.

Meanwhile, also slated for Saturday, Vero Beach takes on Texas power St. John's (3-1) in another match-up of 2010 state championship teams. The Mavericks are fresh off a championship campaign that included impressive wins over Hockaday and Cy-Fair en route to the title. It was the team's seventh overall state championship. This weekend, the Mavericks will look for major production from Sarah Urdahl and Jessica Carroll (Northwestern) at midfield and standout Sarah Duncan on defense in hopes of stifling a potent Vero Beach offense.

Moving to West Coast action, North Coast Section semifinalist Carondelet (CA) has a tough task this weekend as the team faces two of California's most storied programs.

On Friday, the Cougars take on a balanced Coronado team that reached the San Diego Section title game last season. The formidable midfield unit of Michaela Guerrera, Alex Reidy and Kaitlyn Couture will pose as a major roadblock for Carondelet. The Cougars will counter with Erin Jeffery and Hannah Cooper on the offensive end. The duo combined for 10 goals in Carondelet's recent 17-11 win over Menlo School.
