Hughes, Schaefer Key Hartwick Win vs. Cobleskill

ONEONTA, NY Sophomore Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) and freshman Phil Schaefer (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) combined for six goals and six assists on Thursday to lead Hartwick past Cobleskill 11-5 at Wright Stadium. The Hawks, who outshot the visiting Fighting Tigers 32-3 in the first half, jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the game and never looked back.

Hughes registered three goals and three assists while Schaefer contributed a pair of tallied and three helpers. Freshman Brian Finnegan (East Northport, NY/Northport) added two tallies for the Hawks and Dave Aitchison (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) notched a goal and two assists.

The Hawks dominated the opening quarter, scoring five times while outshooting Cobleskill (1-1) by a 13-0 margin. Goals from Schaefer and Matt Landry (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead after the first five and a half minutes of action.

A man-down goal from defender Jake Cooper (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville Manlius) triggered a three-goal spurt for 'Wick over the final four minutes and 31 seconds for the 5-0 edge at the end of one period. Hughes and Ian Skudin (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) netted the Hawks' fourth and fifth tallies.

Aitchison scored from Schaefer 2:06 into the second quarter to extend the advantage to six and the Hawk defense continued to shut down the Fighting Tigers. The 'Wick defensive unit held Cobleskill without a shot over the first 26 minutes, but Hank Delisle finally would get the Orange and Black on the scoreboard with his first of three scores on the day with 3:47 remaining in the half.

The game stayed at 6-1 until the waning minutes of the third quarter when Hughes registered a pair of man-up goals over a 77-second span for an 8-1 lead. Aitchison set up Hughes' second tally of the quarter, giving him 100 points (42 goals and 58 assists) for his four-year career at 'Wick.

The Tigers would close the gap to four early in the fourth. Delisle and Peter Gonzalez scored on the man-advantage and Matt Pellegrini added another tally, all within a 3:23 span, to make it an 8-4 game.

Finnegan, Schaefer, and Hughes, however, would put the game away later in the period as they combined for three straight Hartwick tallies in a 2:21 spurt. Schaefer set up Finnegan on the first with 6:43 left. Hughes then dished assists on goals from both Schaefer and Finnegan. Delisle closed out the scoring with 2:07 left on the clock.

The Hawks finished the game with advantages in shots (50-16) and ground balls (37-24). Alex Skvarch (Syracuse, NY/Marcellus) led 'Wick with five ground balls. Cooper and Schaefer each added four.

Pellegrini and Alex Bendon each recorded four GB's for the Fighting Tigers. Jeff Fichtner registered two assists.

Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) and Nick Triano (N. Andover, MA/St. Johns Prep) combined for eight saves in the Hawk cage. Cobleskill goalie Tom Knezick stooped 16 Hartwick shots.

Hartwick (2-1) plays in two days on Saturday against Farmingdale State. The first face-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.at Wright Stadium.
