Mount Holyoke Rallies to Edge Westfield State in OT

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Freshman Liz Randolph (Southbury, CT) scored four goals, including the game winner, to rally Mount Holyoke College to a 12-11 double overtime women's lacrosse victory over Westfield State University on Thursday night, March 10.

The rain-soaked game was played at Western New England College's Golden Bear Stadium. It was the first victory in three starts for Mount Holyoke. Westfield is 1-1.

Randolph scored the sudden victory goal 20 seconds into the second overtime. The Lyons' Hilary Bombard won the draw control and had the ball quickly knocked out on a solid stick check by Westfield's Ari Colella. The Owls had two opportunities to pick up the loose ball but were unsuccessful. Randolph gained control and sprinted downfield for the game-winning tally.

Mount Holyoke erased a four-goal deficit late in the first half for the comeback victory. A 6-0 Owl run, including three goals from Carly Keeley (Feeding Hills) and two by Maura Stack (Wilbraham) gave Westfield an 8-4 lead with 1:46 remaining in the first half.

But Mount Holyoke scored two goals in the final 1:34 to trail after one period, 8-6.

Mount Holyoke tied the score at 9-all on a Randolph goal with 13:47 remaining in the regulation. The teams then traded goals with Bombard scoring the game-tying tally to make it 11-11 with 2:09 remaining in regulation.

Each team had a close-range shot in the strategic slow-down first overtime but the goalies made fine saves.

Other multiple goal scorers for the Lyons were Alex Crean and Georgia Markell with two goals apiece. Jamie Theophilos was the winning goalie in a reserve role. She entered the game after the Owls had taken a 7-4 lead with 3:36 remaining in the first half.

Keeley led the Owls with four goals and Stack had three goals and two assists. Laura Chiricosta contributed two goals.
