No. 14 Rensselaer Powers Past Oneonta State

TROY, N.Y. Powered by a seven-point effort from senior Conor Chocheles and multiple points from five other players, Rensselaer (RPI) defeated Oneonta State, 16-10 in non-conference action on Friday. With the win, the #14 Engineers improve to 2-1 on the season, while the visiting Red Dragons fall to 0-3 overall.

Rensselaer held a 6-1 advantage after the first half of action, but quickly saw its lead cut as junior Joe Stroessenreuther (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) notched back-to-back goals in the third quarter to make it a 6-3 game. The Engineers got one back as junior Grant Foulsham (Madison, NJ/Madison) collected a nice feed from senior Devin Arnold (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) and fired it in at 7:53, but Oneonta State answered with just over a minute left in the quarter as Stroessenreuther passed it up to senior Tom Kelly (Lake Peekskill, NY/Putnan Valley) to cut the deficit to three (7-4).

Despite the momentum shift at the end of the quarter, the Engineers responded to open the final stanza, recording six straight goals to build up a 13-4 advantage with 8:47 left to play in the contest. Leading the way through the flurry was Chocheles (Babylon, NY/Babylon), who scored and assisted twice.

Oneonta State refused to back down and despite three players serving one-minute penalties, sophomore John DeOrdio (Chenango Forks, NY/Chenango Forks) found the back of the net past RPI netminder James Manchester (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) with 6:44 left to make it a 13-5 contest.

The teams traded goals until the 3:50 mark as RPI scored back-to-back tallies for a 16-6 lead, but the Red Dragons continued to challenge the Engineers' defense down the stretch. As junior Jon Yen (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn) came on in relief of Manchester, the visitors found momentum with four straight goals over the final 2:25. Stroessenreuther, who had a team-high three tallies for Oneonta State, scored with just 15 seconds left on the clock, but RPI held on with a face-off win to seal the victory.

In addition to Chocheles, who posted two goals and five assists for the second time this season, the Engineers saw Arnold record a game-best four goals with an assist. Rookie Scott O'Leary (Grafton, MA/Milton Academy) added three goals, while senior Nick Billy (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) had two goals and two assists. Between the pipes, Manchester picked up the victory with six saves. Yen did not have any saves in relief.

For the Red Dragons, Stroessenreuther finished with three goals and an assist, while DeOrdio notched two goals. Sophomore Jim van de Veerdonk (Putnam, NY/Putnam Valley) added a goal and an assist. In goal, junior Chris Miles (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) shouldered the loss, posting eight saves in the first half. Senior Sean Reynolds (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) played the second-half, also stopping eight shots.

The Engineers are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Texas to face Southwestern University in a 4:00 pm game (3:00 pm Central Time). Oneonta State will play a neutral site contest against Neumann on Wednesday (7:00 pm).
