UC Davis Pulls Away Bryant for Sixth Victory

DAVIS, Calif. -- Elizabeth Datino scored six goals for the second straight game, while senior Christina Corsa added four goals and three assists, to help UC Davis break loose from a 10-10 tie to a 19-12 victory over Bryant in non-conference play at Aggie Stadium Friday afternoon.

Corsa's third assist gave her 71 for her career, tying 2004 NCAA Woman of the Year winner Kelly Albin for the school record. The Aggies, winners of six straight, move to 6-1 for the year. The Bulldogs slip to 1-4.

Besides Datino and Corsa, senior Gina Hoffmire and sophomores Anna Geissbuhler and Hannah Mirza each chipped in two goals. Junior defender Vannessa Jamison tallied a goal and an assist to supplement her two caused turnovers and game-high six ground balls. Mirza led all players with six draw controls.

For Bryant, freshmen Haley Bloom and Katherine Keckeisen combined for seven of their team's 12 goals. Bloom shot 4 for 6 with an assist, while Keckeisen provided three goals with a team-high four draw controls.

The Bulldogs controlled possession for more than five full minutes to start the game before UC Davis freshman Carly Voris intercepted a pass to initiate a Datino goal with 24:38 to go. On the ensuing draw, Mirza won the draw and Datino assisted freshman Meghan Jordan just six seconds later.

Geissbuhler later hit back-to-back goals in the eighth and ninth minutes and Datino converted an eight-meter chance to boost the Aggie lead to 5-2 by the 11:55 mark. Goals by Bryant junior Lauren Sheridan twice cut the deficit to two, but Corsa hit an eight-meter in the final minute to send UC Davis to the halftime break with a 9-5 lead.

Despite playing short-handed for the first three minutes of the second half, Bryant managed to rally back to a tie, first scoring on free positions in the 32nd and 33rd minutes to bring the score to 10-7. Keckeisen hit consecutive goals with 24:06 and 20:53 remaining to cut the Aggie lead to one, then Sheridan assisted Bloom on a free position to tie the score at 10-10 with 20:26 left.

UC Davis failed to hit an eight-meter shot on its next possession, then Bryant goalkeeper Lauren Filippone stopped a pair of shots to protect the tie. However, the Bulldog freshman stepped out of bounds on a clear attempt, giving the Aggies yet another challenge deep in their attacking third. This time, Corsa advanced unassisted for the go-ahead score with 13:39 on the clock. Her was one of three in a 7-1 UC Davis run during the next 10 minutes, effectively sealing the contest. Datino also had two goals in that run.

With less than two minutes remaining, Corsa assisted Datino in transition then fed Mirza off the draw to bring the final tally to 19-12. Friday's win marked the sixth straight game with 15 or more goals for UC Davis, which leads all Division I teams in scoring offense. The Aggies enjoyed a small lead in shots (37 to 29) and draw controls (19-14), enjoying most of their success by forcing 10 of Bryant's 21 turnovers on clear attempts.

UC Davis enters final examinations for its winter term, then returns to action in a Spring Break road trip at Wagner, Iona and Fairfield.
