Millersville Hands Shepherd First Loss of Season

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. -- Kelsey Schmoltze scored six goals and added two assists to lead Millersville University to a 15-9 win over Shepherd University in women's lacrosse action at Millersville on Friday. The loss was the first for the Rams this season.

Millersville also got three goals from Ashley Henderson and two from Kathryn Kehring.

Sophomore attack Nicole Ruane (Sykesville, MD/Century) tallied four goals and had a pair of assists to lead the Rams. Freshman attack/midfielder Shannon Carta (Davidsonville, MD/South River) added two goals and an assist.

Freshman attack Jenny Cavey (Sykesville, MD/Westminster) tallied a goal and an assist. Junior defendef/midfielder Melissa Neagle (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll) and sophomore attack/midfielder Krista Tippett (Leonardtown, MD/Leonardtown) had single goals, while freshman attack Christina Ferrara (California, MD/Leonardtown) contributed an assist.

Millersville took a 10-6 lead into intermission behind four first half goals from Schmoltze.

Shepherd got to within three goals in the second half at 11-8 on an unassisted goal by Neagle with 26:33 remaining, but would get no closer.

Millersville had a 26-20 advantage in shots, while Shepherd had a 28-26 edge in ground balls.

Freshman netminder Emily Melanson (Davidsonville, MD/South River) had five saves for the Rams. Courtney Haggerty (8 saves) and Lauren Mateja (1) combined for nine saves for the Marauders.

Shepherd drops to 4-1, while Millersville improves to 0-1. The Rams return to action on Monday when they travel to St. Petersburg, FL, to face Bentley in a 3:00 p.m. contest.
