No. 15 Stevens Cruises Past Roger Williams

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 9, 2011) Senior co-captains Brandon Faubert (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Chris Laurita (South Brunswick, N.J.) each finished with five points, while junior Eric Yando (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) recorded eight saves without allowing a goal, as Stevens, ranked 15th in the latest USILA coaches' poll, cruised to a 16-3 victory over Roger Williams at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J.

Looking to set the tone early, Faubert notched the game's first tally at 8:38 of the first off of an Alex Hofrichter (Terrance Park, Ohio) assist. The senior co-captain then netted another goal less than a minute later, firing a Nicolas Philippi (Mullica Hill, N.J.) pass past Roger Williams senior goalkeeper Tyler Roebuck (Montgomery, N.J.), to stake Stevens to a 2-0 advantage.

Hoping to build on the momentum, the Ducks erupted for four goals over the final five minutes of the frame to extend the margin to 6-0. Junior Rich Dupras (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Laurita got Stevens' run started with back-to-back goals at 4:35 and 2:49, respectively, before sophomore Brian Seldeen (Wayne, N.J.) took a pass from junior faceoff specialist Michael Steinhauser (Boonton Twp., N.J.), and netted the game's fifth tally just nine seconds after Laurita's. Faubert closed out the quarter with his third goal of the game, an unassisted marker with just 40 seconds left in the stanza.

Picking up where they left off, Laurita notched the first two goals of the second, scoring on a Kevin Rose (Garden City, N.Y.) assist with 12:17 in the quarter before combining with Hofrichter on a man-up situation with a little over seven minutes to go before the half. Continuing to go on the offensive, Stevens again closed out the quarter strong, getting a consecutive scores from Dupras inside the five-minute mark to take a 10-0 lead into the intermission.

With another stellar performance in net, Yando recorded eight saves on nine shots, putting together 30 shutout minutes between the pipes, to help set the pace Stevens' dominant first-half.

Trying to keep Roger Williams at bay, Laurita and Philippi scored a pair of goals within the first three minutes of the third period. Rose then got on the board at the 9:19, turning a Hofrichter pass into a score, before the Hawks' Drew Beck (Cross River, N.Y.) finally broke through with a marker at the 5:43 mark. Undaunted, the Ducks responded with a pair of goals from senior Jacob Messimer (Rush, N.Y.) and Faubert his fourth of the day to take a 15-1 lead into the fourth quarter.

With the Ducks still in control, freshman Sean Scrudato (Westfield, N.J.) tallied Stevens' final score of the afternoon less than five minutes into the fourth period. Roger Williams' sophomore attackman Ian Powers (Shrewsbury, Mass.) would string together a couple of late scores, but Stevens proved to be too much, earning a 16-3 triumph its fifth to begin the 2011 campaign.

Faubert and Laurita each finished with a goal and an assist for five points, while Dupras netted a hat-trick in the victory. Rose, Messimer, Philippi, and Seldeen also tallied goals, with Rose adding a pair of assists. Steinhauser finished with a team-high 10 ground balls, going 9 for 15 from the 'X'.

Freshman Tim Culloty (Mahwah, N.J.) added four ground balls and three caused turnovers, while junior Matt Marks (Cortland, N.Y.) caused a team-high four miscues.

Stevens went 14 for 22 on face-offs for the day, while going 20 for 21 on clears. The Ducks, who helped cause 31 Roger Williams turnovers, while holding a 34-24 edge in ground balls, outshot the Hawks, 70-21.

Stevens returns to action on Wednesday, March 16 at Lynchburg College.
