Randolph Tops Albion for Team's First-Ever Win

LYNCHBURG, VA Randolph College scored a season-high 11 goals en route to the program's first ever win, a 11-7 victory over Albion College (MI) in non-conference play from WildCat Stadium Saturday.

Randolph (1-5) led the majority of the game, as first-year Cam Garrison (Plymouth, IN/Culver Military) netted a goal just over two minutes into the game to put Randolph up 1-0. Jeremy Simms of Albion (1-4) answered right back just 13 seconds later with an unassisted tally to pull the Britons even. The WildCats rattled off the game's next three goals, as first-year Ryan Jarrett (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) had a goal bookended by a pair from sophomore TJ Story (Darien, CT/Darien).

After the quarter break, Albion would trim the Randolph advantage to two thanks to another score by Simms. Garrison would strike with 10:58 left for the WildCats to make the game 5-2, and Story scored his third of a program-record five goals with 3:29 left in the first half to send the game to intermission with Randolph up 6-2.

Following the halftime break, the WildCats upped their lead to five thanks to another man-up goal, this time coming from first-year Bobby Crosby (Bethel, CT/Bethel) with help from Jon O'Hara (Yorktown, VA/Grafton). Randolph scored three times on man-up situations Saturday. Albion put together a surge though, scoring the game's next two goals, both unassisted goals from Gerry Battersby and Tyler Kilpatrick.

The WildCats got their first ever man-down goal with 4:38 left in the third period, as sophomore pole Gage Anderson (Littleton, CO/Columbine) went coast-to-coast and beat Albion keeper Joe Berry for the goal. Anderson's goal was his first ever, and also made the game 8-4 for Randolph. Kilpatrick notched his second of the day and 12th of the season to make the score 8-5, but Story answered right back with another goal with help from Stephen Allman (Goodview, VA/Roanoke Catholic) to push the lead back to four.

The WildCats entered the fourth quarter leading 9-6, and added to the lead at the 12:05 mark with another strike from Crosby. Story put a cap on the WildCat scoring with three minutes to go, and the WildCats would close the game out on defense for their historic first win in program history.

Story set a program-record for goals in a game, while Allman posted the school-mark for helpers in a contest with four. Crosby and Garrison each finished with two goals and one assist, while O'Hara chipped in with two assists. Randolph keeper Kevin McCracken (Annandale, VA/Annandale), who has started every game since the program's inception back in 2009, got his first victory making 16 saves.

"I'm very proud of this team, not for just the win but for how they played against a solid opponent," said Randolph head coach Scott Ketcham, who earned his first win as the head boss at Randolph. "I think that this win gets us over the hump and now we can relax and go out and really surprised some people this season."

Story added a team-best seven ground balls to his season total, while John Grundy (Gainesville, VA/Battlefield) won nine of 19 face-offs to go with six pickups. Anderson had a team-high four caused turnovers while long-stick midfielder Ryan Blackwell (Brambleton, VA/Briar Woods) chalked up three caused turnovers and three ground balls.

Kilpatrick posted a team-best three points (2 G, 1 A) for Albion, which outshot the WildCats 37-35. Ian Monkman made eight saves for the Britons, while Berry relieved him in net, making a pair of stops.

The WildCats get a week off before returning to WildCat Stadium Saturday to open Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play with a contest against Guilford College at 1:30 p.m.
