Artem Nets Eight Goals as #12 Catawba Tops Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, FL -- Junior Braden Artem (Acton, Ontario/Christ the King) tied a school record with eight goals to lead 12th-ranked Catawba to an exciting 21-15 win over host Saint Leo in DSC action on Saturday afternoon at University Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the DSC, while the Lions fall to 4-2 and 2-1.

Saint Leo scored twice to start the second half and led 12-11 before Artem scored consecutive goals to start a 5-0 run that gave Catawba the lead for good. George Proechel scored twice for the Lions in the opening five minutes as Saint Leo rallied within 16-15, but Marty Tuohy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) and Artem scored a pair of goals in a 20 second span just under the six minute mark to regain control for the Indians, who scored the game's final five goals.

The Indians scored the opening two goals, but the Lions answered back. The teams traded goals until Ray Ferrara gave Saint Leo its first lead at 5-4 and Proechel's tally gave the hosts a 6-5 edge after a quarter.

Catawba scored the opening three goals of the second quarter behind Artem, Trevor Sieracki (Austin, TX/Anderson HS) and Alex Hodges (Columbia, SC/Whitney Point,NY HS/Broome CC) to lead 8-6 only to have the Lions get tallies from Proechel and Mark Walczyk to even the game. The game was tied 9-9 at the half.

After Saint Leo went up 11-9 to start the third quarter, Hodges and Artem struck to tie it back up. Connor McBride gave the Lions their last lead midway through the quarter before Artem sparked Catawba. He scored to tie the game at the 8:02 mark then added the go-ahead goal 15 seconds later. The junior assisted on goals by Tuohy (7:02) and Hodges (6:25) to help up the margin to 15-12. Cory Losselyong (Lewisville, NC/W. Forsyth HS) made it 16-12 at the end of the frame.

The Lions pulled back within a goal, scoring three times in a span of a minute and a half. Proechel sandwiched two goals around one from Matt Obermeyer to make it 16-15 with 10:25 left. The Indians kept Saint Leo off the board after that and Tuohy's tally at the 5:55 mark put the Tribe up by two. Artem followed with 5:36 left and Losselyong a minute later to stretch the lead to 19-15.

Artem's double-digit point day featured eight goals and two assists. Phil Hemmeler held the record as he twice scored eight goals in a game, the last time in 2000. Tuohy had three goals and three helpers, while Hodges and Losselyong also tallied three times. Proechel scored four goals for the Lions, while Ferrara and Obermeyer each had two.

Catawba out-shot the Lions 45-38. Saint Leo held the advantage in ground balls (49-33) and face-offs, winning 23 of 38. Michael Pecchia (Coquitlam, BC/Heritage Woods) had eight saves in goal for the Indians, while Patrick Berry made 10 stops for Saint Leo.
