St. Mary's Runs by Centenary for Second Win of Day

St. Mary's City, Md. Following its 19-8 victory over Ohio Wesleyan in the morning, St. Mary's posted a commanding 16-4 win over Centenary (N.J.) Saturday afternoon. Despite playing only five minutes, junior attacker Melissa Mayer (Crofton, Md./South River) paced the Seahawks (6-2) with a hat trick as Mayer scored the first three goals of the game in a span of 2:39.

Senior midfielder Aubrey Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) repeated her performance from the morning with two goals and two assists while sophomore midfielder Erin Shackelford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) contributed to the Seahawk offense a goal and three assists.

After sophomore attacker Allie Swartz (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) put Centenary (1-1) on the board, St. Mary's rattled off eight straight to head into halftime with an 11-1 advantage. Mirkin and senior attacker Maggie Macleay (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) each had two goals in the 8-0 run.

The Seahawks extended their scoring streak to 10-0 with goals by senior defender Hannah Cooley (Abington, Pa./Abington) and first-year attacker Molly Malarkey (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) to start the second half. Junior attacker Meredith Bruce (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) slowed down St. Mary's momentum with back-to-back goals before the Seahawks scored three of the game's final four goals.

Bruce paced the Cyclones with her two second-half goals while Swartz and sophomore defender Alysia Pinkerton (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) each scored a goal.

St. Mary's nearly doubled up on the visitors in shots with a 31-16 margin while claiming a 14-6 margin in draw controls as Mirkin won three. The Cyclones edged the home team in ground balls, 13-11.

In goal, junior Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) needed to make just two saves in 24:49 while senior Jamie Roberts (Rockville, Md./Barrie) recorded six stops and three goals against in the win.

St. Mary's returns to action next Wednesday, March 16 when the Seahawks travel to Carlisle, Pennsylvania to take on Dickinson College in non-conference action at 1:00 pm.
