Strong Finish Helps #1 C.W. Post by #8 Bentley

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 12, 2011) - The C.W. Post men's lacrosse team played in a defensive affair against #8 Bentley University as the Pioneers pulled out a 6-3 non-conference win on Saturday afternoon.

The top-ranked Pioneers improve their record to 7-0 overall with the win, while still holding a 2-0 conference record in the ECC. Bentley opens the season at 0-1.

The Falcons jumped out early on the Pioneers with a 1-0 lead after Dan Keefer scored at the 7:49 mark of the first quarter. Bentley controlled the next several minutes of play until the 3:12 point when a Bentley shot would ring off the post, allowing the Pioneers to scoop the ground ball and clear to the offensive half of the field. Senior midfielder #Mike Messina# (Sayville, N.Y.) tallied the first Pioneer goal at the 2:26 point to tie the game at one.

A costly turnover by Bentley midfielder Dante Mancini in the waning minutes of the quarter led to the Pioneers' second goal of the period as junior attackman #Eddie Plompen# (West Islip, N.Y.) fed the ball to senior #Jimmy Johnston# (Farmingville, N.Y.) for his first goal of the game. The score was 2-1 in favor of the Pioneers at the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, C.W. Post got the ball off of a Bentley turnover as the Falcons were trying to clear, and freshman #Steven Burke# (Yorktown, N.Y.) scooped up the ground ball to give the Pioneers possession. Senior #Nick Coric# (Walnut Creek, Calif.) notched a goal at the 12:04 mark to give C.W. Post a 3-1 advantage.

Later in the second quarter, a cross-checking penalty on junior midfielder #Wade Unger# (Middle Island, N.Y) allowed Bentley to take advantage of the man-up situation to trim the lead to 3-2. Johnston tallied his second goal of the game just over six minutes later to balloon the lead back up to 4-2 heading into the halftime break.

Both teams went scoreless during the third period, despite three man-up opportunities for Bentley as the C.W. Post defense was able to hold the Falcons offense.

In the fourth quarter, Bentley would control the majority of the first eight minutes of the period, and would cut the C.W. Post lead to one on a goal by Nick Astarita at the 6:54 mark of the final quarter. Three minutes later the Pioneers answered quickly on a goal by junior attackman #Owen Campbell# (Massapequa, N.Y.).

C.W. Post would win the ensuing faceoff and control the ball for the next 2:10 before Messina capped off the scoring, giving the Pioneers the 6-3 lead. Messina and Johnston each led the Pioneers with two goals scored. Eddie Plompen (West Islip, N.Y.) and Erik Boyd (Coram, N.Y.) each tallied two caused turnovers. Senior Ronnie Irving (Glen Head, N.Y.) was 8 for 10 on face-offs.

In goal for the green and gold was senior #Mike Giordano# (Farmingdale, N.Y.), who notched his seventh win of the season while making two saves and collecting two ground balls.

The Pioneers will return to action on Wednesday, March 16 when they take on Saint Anselm at 4:00 p.m.
