Welton Helps Sewanee Outgun Guilford

SEWANEE, Tenn. Megan Welton scored four goals and two assists in the University of the South's 16-13 lacrosse win over visiting Guilford College Saturday. Allison Bland and Carly Grimm both scored three times for the Tigers (2-2), who won for the second straight game.

Sewanee led throughout the close game and led by no more than two goals for the contest's first 32 minutes. The Tigers scored four of the first five second-half goals to open a 12-7 margin with 24 minutes left, but the Quakers battled back to within 13-11 after a 4-1 run that featured two of Kathryn Carella's three goals.

Playing with a man advantage after a Guilford yellow card, Sewanee's Bland scored unassisted with 10:47 remaining. Welton followed just over two minutes later with her fourth and final tally, boosting the Tigers' lead to an insurmountable 15-11.

Seven different Tigers tallied in the victory, including Megan Valle and Victoria Friedman, who both scored twice. Amy Nusbaum made 12 saves in goal.

E'Leyna Garcia and Summer Frazier paced the Quakers' offense with three goals and an assist apiece. Liza Metter stopped six shots in goal.

Guilford opens Old Dominion Athletic Conference play next Saturday against visiting Bridgewater College at 4:00 p.m.
