Dominican Falls to Wheeling Jesuit to Drop 3rd Straight

Throggs Neck, NY (3/13/11) - Dominican College lost their third consecutive and the opening game of ECC play today, when they fell to Wheeling Jesuit, 7-5, in a game played at Reinhart Field on the campus of SUNY-Maritime. Following the loss, the Chargers drop to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the ECC.

A lone Dominican goal accounted for the scoring in the first period as junior attacker Korin Pierce (Middleburg, VA) scored his first goal of the game and his third of the season off a pass from freshman Collin Madsen (Salt Lake City, UT) with 11:54 to go.

The second period saw eight total goals scored as WJU got things going with a game-tying score at the 13:46 mark. A 2-0 spurt by DC with goals from senior midfielder Jesse Peterson (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada) and Pierce's second goal off a pass from attacker Connor Lawlor (Neptune City, NJ) regained a 3-1 lead for the Chargers with 8:57 to go before halftime.

The Cardinals closed out the second period with five unanswered goals to go up 6-3 at the intermission.

WJU opened up second half scoring with their sixth consecutive goal with 8:09 left in the period to increase the lead to 7-3.

Dominican netted their first goal of the second half with 6:02 left in the third period as senior midfielder Alex Jones (St. Albert, AB, Canada) recorded his first of two goals in the game off the assist from Peterson to make the score 7-4 after three periods.

Jones netted his second goal with 13:56 left in the game off the pass from freshman Thomas Dertinger (Nanuet, NY) to cut the lead to 7-5.

Pierce and Jones each tallied two goals a-piece to lead the Chargers, while Peterson finished with one goal and one assist.

Senior goalie Brendan Bonacum (Port Jefferson Station, NY) made 10 saves in the loss.
