Gray Leads USMMA to 14-4 Rout over Mount Ida

BAYVILLE, N.Y. On Monday night, the United States Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team defeated Mount Ida College, 14-4 in Bayville, N.Y. for its first home victory of 2011. With the win, the Mariners improved their record to 2-3. Following the loss, the Mustangs fell to 0-3 on the season.

USMMA matched their best first quarter of the season by notching four goals. The last time the Mariners did that was against Manhattanville on Thursday. Senior attackman Zach Gray (Scituate, Mass.) recorded the early hat trick, while senior midfielder Arthur Frooks (Manhasset, N.Y.) tallied the last goal before the end of the period.

The Mariners tallied two more goals in the second period, as junior attack Sean Zakow (South Huntington, N.Y.) and Gray both found the back of the net. The Mustangs however, would try to mount a comeback recording two man-up goals, which would cut into the Kings Point lead, 6-2. Senior attack Matt Savage (Peabody, Mass.) struck for the first Mount Ida goal at the 6:23 mark, before sophomore attack/midfielder Nick Yacuzzi (Worcester, Mass.) would connect at the 5:41 mark. Gray would strike for USMMA recording his fifth goal of the game at the 2:19 mark for the 7-2 lead at halftime.

Kings Point would not look back as they would record five goals in the third and fourth periods, before the Mustangs would notch two more in the final frame to make the score 12-4. Zakow and Gray would record their final goals of the game at the 6:34 mark, and the 3:03 mark respectively to cap off the 14-4 victory.

For the Mariners, Gray led the offense with eight goals and one assist for a total of nine points. Zakow finished the night with three goals and three assists for a total of six points. Sophomore attackman Michael Ackerman (Malvern, Pa.) also did well dishing out two assists. In the cage, freshman Shawn Kane (Duluth, Ga.) picked up the victory making five saves.

Head Coach Tom Gill and the Mariners return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Throggs---- Neck, N.Y. as they face non-conference foe SUNY Maritime. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.Monday
